Applications from Ireland

Admissions Procedures:

1. Standard Applicants

Applications to Dublin Institute of Design are made online or via email at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Applicants are requested to submit the application form and course deposit, ensuring that all details are filled out correctly.
Upon submitting, you will receive an email from the Admissions Team, usually within one week, requesting the following documents:

  • CV detailing your academic/work history
  • Certificate copies of your most recent educational qualification (second or third level), and a transcript of results for all subjects taken
  • Proof that the applicant has the required level of English (IELTS Level 6 for Degree entry, Level 5.5 for all other programmes)
  • A copy of the photo page of your passport / drivers license

Should your course require a portfolio submission, the Admissions Team will advise you on this. Portfolios are assessed against the following criteria:

Sketchbooks: Sketchbooks, showing the visual development of art and design techniques, design thinking and media manipulation which have become finished pieces in your portfolio.

Creative Thinking: You should provide evidence of a creative process in your work.

Drawing: Studies in line and tone, based on your immediate environment, including life drawing and still life, in a range of media which reflects the subject matter, should be included.

Visual enquiry: Explorations/investigations of an object or a place through studies in line, tone, shape, form, colour and texture should form part of the portfolio.

Design-based problem solving projects: Include projects demonstrating your ability to solve problems and develop ideas.

Optional: Photographic examples of three-dimensional work.

Once documentation has been submitted and approved, applicants will receive a letter of confirmation from Dublin Institute of Design. You will also receive a statement of account at this stage.

2. Non Standard Applicants

There are several categories of Non Standard applicants:

A) Applicants who do not meet the specified academic entry requirements for a programme. This can refer to applicants who have not met the minimum Leaving Certificate results requirement and applicants who do not have a portfolio where a portfolio is a specified entry requirement. Applications are accepted from non standard applicants who may be given the opportunity of attending an interview and/or aptitude test to assess their suitability for entry to a programme. Non standard applicants make their application using the online application form.

B) Mature Applicants. Dublin Institute of Design welcomes applications from mature applicants for our full-time and part-time programmes. A mature applicant is defined as someone who is 23 years of age or over at the time of course commencement. Please refer to our Mature Applicants page for more information. C) Advanced Entry Applicants. If you have previous work experience or educational achievements that are directly relevant to your course application, you may be considered as a candidate for Advanced Entry by Dublin Institute of Design. Please refer to our Advanced Entry page for more information.

3. International (Non-EU) Applicants

Dublin Institute of Design promotes a culturally diverse students body, and currently has students attending from a wide range of countries. Please refer to our International Students page for more information. International applicants make their application using the online application form.
