Merchandising is an integral part of every retail business and its importance to the sector continues to grow. The presentation of products and space management are key factors in the success of any store. In this course, you will learn from an experienced visual merchandiser who has worked in a wide range of industry positions. .
This course is delivered by a mix of online classes and field trips. Two of the sessions are field trips in which you will examine and discuss the window displays of a range of retail stores. We will follow social distancing protocols during these field trips.
Throughout the course, you will learn how to develop original ideas for window displays and instore displays, how to research visual merchandising trends, and how to present your ideas to colleagues and clients.You will also learn how to dress mannequins, and use lighting, fixtures and fittings, colour and product grouping to create impressive displays.
The course is ideal if you are exploring the possibility of a career change, or if you are already working in the retail sector and wish to add visual merchandising to your skill set. Our part-time studying options allow you to study while working full-time.

During this course you will learn the theory and core skills of visual merchandising, gain practical competence in retail display, as well as an understanding of brand image and consumer behaviour in a store context.
Topics covered include:
- The role of the Visual Merchandiser within the Retail System
- Fundamentals of Visual Merchandising
- Fixtures and Fittings: how to suit them to the product; custom built or ready made
- Mannequins: suitability; how to dress them
- Use of Props: where to get props; how to use them
- Graphics: as a prop/visual aid; as information
- Colour and Lighting: its importance; best uses
- Merchandising: general tips; visual awareness; customer relations/communication

On successful completion of the course, you will be awarded a Dublin Institute of Design Certificate in Visual Merchandising and Window Dressing.
